Bundestag debate and roll-call vote on the art project "TO THE POPULATION" on April 5, 2000

Although Haacke’s project proposal had previously been adopted twice by a large majority by the responsible body, the Arts Advisory Board, the German Bundestag met on April 5th to consider a group motion by 178 members of parliament on the “rejection of the art project OF THE POPULATION”.

Eleven speakers had the floor before the roll-call vote. Here is a compilation of their speeches.

Roll-call vote on motion

Document 14/2867 (new) “The art project in the northern atrium of the Reichstag building by Hans Haacke OF THE POPULATION will not be realized.”

The motion to prevent the population from participating was rejected by a majority of two votes. Thus, Haacke’s concept, as decided by the responsible art advisory board, could be implemented in the northern atrium of the Reichstag building.
